I wasn’t going to go out on Valentine’s Day. My boyfriend did not exactly care about such things and I decided long ago not to bother myself. The previous year, I practically had to do everything myself: the reservations, the gifts, and yes, I even bought myself flowers with his credit card.

This year would be no different. I already knew from the way he casually brushed aside any attempts I made about having an actual plan. It didn’t matter anymore. I was just going to binge watch Harry Potter all day while he lounges somewhere around the house.

My boyfriend and I have been living together for two years now. I know I know, wrong shit, but I really don’t care at this point.  I walked into the house and he was laying on the tiled floor with a sheepish smile on his face.

I rolled my eyes.

“You look very beautiful when you’re mad, baby”.

“Emeka, I don’t have strength for your games, abeg. I need to prepare dinner.”

“Dinner? What do you have planned?” He still had that glint in his eyes that spoke volumes. Emeka was a very calculating person. He rarely did anything without first thinking it through.

“Yes, dinner. Spaghetti Bolog….” My voice trailed off as he stood up and walked towards me. When I had come in earlier, I hadn’t paid much attention to him but now I couldn’t seem to take my eyes off him. He was stark naked. You have to understand when I say that Emeka was very well sculpted. He was tall and big – not fat, just very well filled out. He had a gait like a god, and his eyes – his eyes were everything. What caught my attention was his dick. It was big and the sight of it always got me horny.

“Emeka…” I began and he shushed me. He stood so close to me now and my whole body felt like liquid. I couldn’t move away, not that I wanted to.

I had no underwear on because I had been in too much of a rush to leave and get to the…wait where was I rushing to again? I lost my train of thought as he kissed my exposed shoulders, then lifted and carried me to our bedroom.

“Chidiogo, you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.” He said softly as he slipped my dress off my shoulders.

It was all flowers and candles. I gasped and my eyes filled with tears.

“Emeka…” He dropped me gently on my feet and I stood and stared in awe.

“Chidiogo, I have been listening”. I turned around and gasped. He was on bended knee and held a ring in his hand. I giggled and sobbed at the same time. Here he was completely naked, with a ring. It was a really funny sight.

“Everything about you is so annoying, Dee. I hate how you can get under my skin. I hate how completely vulnerable I feel around you. I can’t imagine life without you and I wake up everyday praying to never know what it means to be without you. You are my life force. And I know I am less than ideal and I have managed to disappoint you every step of the way, but how you have stayed with me still baffles me. I need to make this arrangement permanent before you allow common sense prevail and ask for a refund!”

“Emeka…” I was speechless. He stood then and slipped the ring on my finger. He lifted me and carried me, dropping me on the bed so gently that if I wasn’t already crying, I’d definitely have started.

“I love you so much.” I whispered as he entered me in one long stroke.

“I love you too, Dee.”

I woke up to the sound of a phone ringing. It wasn’t mine. I was sure of that so I ignored it. That didn’t make it go away though. I sighed as I sat up allowing the blankets to slip off my shoulders. I smiled again at the memory of last night and fingered the ring that was on my third finger. In my head I was already planning out my wedding. The insistent ring on the phone caused me to stand up from the bed.

“Emeka, your phoneeeeeeee.” I heard him mumble something about him being in the toilet and I rolled my eyes as I walked naked to the kitchen to get a glass of wine. Emeka was not one of those that likes to go to the loo with their phones. I sat down in the kitchen sipping on my wine. I couldn’t wait to tell my friends that he popped the question! I was still smiling when my phone rang. It was Abiola, my best friend.

“Girl! You won’t believe what I’m about to tell you!” She was silent for a while.

“Biola? You there?”

“Yes.” she said in a squeaky voice then she cleared her throat. “Yes, I don’t know…really I have no idea why…ok…err I am glad you sound so much better. See babe, are you ok? I really wished you had let me come home with you.”

Come home? What was she talking about?

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“What am I…You know what, fuck this! I’m coming over. Shouldn’t have let you go home alone in the first place!’ She hung up and I stared at the phone, surprised. What was going on? Suddenly, it all came rushing back.

“No! no! no!” I stood up and rushed to the bedroom. No! Emeka’s phone was still ringing. Why wasn’t he picking the damn phone?

‘Why aren’t you picking the damn phone!’ I asked him. He was leaning on the bathroom door, still naked, still smiling gently, as if he knew something I didn’t. I glanced frantically around, the roses where still there, the flowers too. The candle was all blown out but the sweet scent still lingered.

“Emeka…why aren’t you picking up your phone?” I asked, pointing to the direction of the now silent phone.

“You know exactly why, baby. You know why I can’t pick up that phone.” Yes, I knew why. I knew exactly why.

“Emeka, why won’t you pick up your phone?” He didn’t answer. He walked slowly to where I was and leaned over me, brushing his lips lightly again mine. It felt real, it was real.

“You know why.” He said again. Yes, I knew why. I had forgotten before but now I remembered.

The Emeka standing in front of me though was very much alive, the Emeka standing in front of me didn’t die few hours ago. The Emeka standing in front of me couldn’t be more real. There was a knock on the door. I reached out and I touched him, yes, he was very real. The knock continued. His smooth skin, his face. As if from a distance, I heard my phone ring. I already knew it was Biola. I let my hand fall to my side, he is very real.

The knock on the door made me jump followed by Biola’s “Girl, if you don’t open up!”. I shouldn’t be so surprised, she stayed few blocks away.

“Well, what will you do?” Emeka asked. I stared down at the ring glinting on my third finger and I took a deep breath. I dashed away the tears I didn’t know were flowing.

“I will be right back.”

Well, happy bloody valentine to me.
